Main points and attitude — what a text is for, and how a person shifts

For this Saturday only, because the street outside the school is closed for an event, the number 32 will run along the street behind instead and the stop moves a hundred metres up, outside the small shop; everything is back to normal on Sunday.

When she first moved she found it too quiet and it frightened her a little — by eight in the evening there was nobody in the street. What changed her was people rather than the place: the fruit seller keeps a bag back for her when she is home late, and when she was ill last week the woman downstairs brought her a meal. She no longer wants to move — she used to think there was nothing here, and now she thinks there are people here.

Her mother has a meeting and will not be home until after eight; there is food on the table and her daughter should eat without waiting; and the reason for the call is the last part — she is asking her to take her younger brother to his game at six, though he will make his own way home.

From this month the city library lends more than books: you can borrow tools as well — for repairs, for cooking, for taking photographs. The reason given is that a lot of things are used once a year and then sit there after you buy them. It appears to be working: they have been borrowed eight hundred times in three months.

He used to think the teacher was simply too strict — talk in class and he makes you stand up. What changed was one thing that did not happen: he handed nothing in last month and expected to be named in front of the class, and instead the teacher took him aside afterwards and asked whether something was wrong at home. He has not come round to liking him: he still dislikes being made to stand up. What has changed is that he now understands why the teacher is like that.

Her purpose is to get listeners to put a bookshelf outside their own front doors, and she says so in the last line. Everything before it is there to remove the objections: how it works is as simple as it can be — take one, leave one, no money and no names — and the question people actually ask, what happens when the books run out, is answered with three months of evidence: there are now more books than she started with. She also rules out the reading a listener might otherwise make — she is not telling the story to be thanked.

Before she stopped, the sight of a pencil made her tired: her teacher would say this one was good and that one was not, and she came away thinking she was no good at it. The year off did not kill it — she drew nothing, but whenever she saw something worth drawing she still wanted to. What is different now is not that she enjoys it more, but why she does it: she keeps the finished drawings to herself, and although she can still tell whether they are any good, that is no longer the reason she draws.

She opens hard and closed: it broke after two uses in three days and she wants her money back — she is not asking, she is telling. The turn comes when he takes the blame rather than defending the shop: he says it should never have been sold to her for a child and that they should have changed it that day. Her next line shows the shift already happening — she stops arguing about the product and asks what happens now, with the real worry underneath it, that she does not want a third trip. Once he offers a replacement today against a refund that takes three days, she takes the exchange. But she has not come round to being satisfied: her last words are still a complaint, that next time they should tell people properly.
